Hope you are taking lots of photos, lots of drawings... everything starts with documentation.
Be sure to see Randolph Langenbach's site - he is foremost researcher/promoter of seismic-resistant vernacular construction.

Everything is about dialogue - exchanging knowledge. See what locals know about the strengths of their traditional architecture. Hands-on activities with kids to sensitize them to what makes a building able to sustain lateral forces etc.
